FACTS ABOUT THE RENEWAL INCOME TAX (1.25% levy)
On May 2, 2023, Fremont City Schools will ask the Fremont community to vote on the RENEWAL Income Tax Levy.
Originally passed in 2003 and with voter support has continued to be “renewed” every five years. (2008, 2013, 2018)
Passage of the RENEWAL Income Tax Levy will NOT increase taxes.
These monies, that make up 19% of the District Budget, are used strictly for the operating expenses of Fremont City Schools.
This RENEWAL is necessary to maintain the District’s current services and programs for our students.
Fremont City Schools has been and will continue to be accountable with your tax dollars.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. Will this RENEWAL Income Tax Levy increase my taxes?
No. This is a RENEWAL levy. No increase.
2. Who pays the RENEWAL Income Tax?
All Fremont City School District residents pay the 1.25% income tax through employer withholdings, individual quarterly estimated payments or annual returns.
3. Why is the levy on the ballot now?
This 1.25% income tax was RENEWED in May 2018 for five years and will expire in December 2023.
The support of the community is needed in order to maintain the current student programs and services for another five years.
4. What will be cut if this levy does not pass?
The community has been paying a School District Income Tax to pay for the operation of the school district since 1993. When it was originally approved it was for .75%. In 2003, it had to be increased to 1.25% to cover increased costs. The funds which are generated by the income tax comprises 19% of the school district's budget for operations. Should the income tax not be renewed it would necessitate some pretty severe program cuts. A 19% reduction is quite sizable. It will be the duty of the Board of Education, upon the recommendation of the Superintendent and Treasurer, to determine the specific cuts which will be necessary to balance the budget. Those decisions have not been made as we are hopeful the income tax, which has been renewed each time it has been presented to the community until the last election, will be successful May 2. It is not a new tax. It is a renewal of the tax we have been paying for the past 20 years.
